The Famous Story
Steeped in rich Filipino tradition, our Lumpia recipe has been passed down through generations. A quintessential cuisine of the Philippines, it was one of the first foods we shared with our new neighbors after making the long journey from Cebu to America in the 1970s. The prized possession of our Lola Connie and her future daughter-in-law Laura, our eggrolls made us quite popular at parties, and have definitely found a welcome home with us here in Omaha!
America was exactly the dream Laura, Lola, and their family hoped it would be.
They found love and excitement in the fast pace of the states, but they always made time to slow down for family and food. Having spent years teaching Laura the Rivera family traditions, Lola bestowed the family recipes upon her. Laura perfected her technique and received Lola’s blessing to continue the traditions before her passing in 1989.
Laura’s eggrolls became a crowd favorite at every family gathering, work party, school function, and dinner with friends. Soon, they were in high demand, and Laura secured a small stand at the College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium. Stocked with a thousand or more eggrolls each game, she would still sell out by the 4th inning. Laura couldn’t keep up!
It wasn’t until years later when Laura’s son, Andrew, saw the potential of the Omaha Farmer’s Markets as a way to share his mom’s famous eggrolls and his family’s love of food once again. Now retired with 9 grandchildren, Laura continues to do what she loves: feed people her famous eggrolls and watch the smiles roll in.
